Hitherto, in the absence of sufficient number of certified consultants in the market, the industries implementing SAP system were compelled to hire the services of SAP professionals, who took training from unauthorized institutions who conducted SAP courses on pirated software. Reportedly, some of these institutions imparted only about 30% of the actual course content resulting in large knowledge gaps. They also reportedly got these consultants employed in some of the industries by resorting to dubious means. Consequently the industries, who were saddled with such half–baked consultants, found that quality of SAP implementation in their processes was far below the expectations. The industries have, therefore, started weeding out these sub-standard human resources by adopting stringent standards and black-listing them. With NASCOM now maintaining a data mine of the CVs, the chances of such black listed candidates being absorbed in the industry are bleak.

To address these twin issues facing the industry and the student/professionals, SAP through its partners at various centres, throughout India, started imparting SAP courses to provide a quality resource pool of certified consultants. The candidates undergoing the mandatory number of hours of training in SAP at these centres are permitted to take the certification examination. The examinations are conducted at periodic intervals. The examination is on-line with multiple choices of answers and the candidates have to secure a minimum of 55% marks for certification. The candidate is allowed to take the examination only twice.
